Blepharitis

  • Inflammation of the eyelid
  • Symptoms may include discharge and swelling of the eyelid and the feeling that something is in the eye
  • Caused most often by a bacterial infection of the eyelids but may also be due to a viral infection or an allergic reaction
  • Commonly seen with dry eyes or some skin conditions
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in older adults
  • May be short or long term
  • May be mild to severe resulting in vision problems if left untreated

Clean eyelids with wash cloth or cotton swab dipped in solution of baby shampoo and water (2 to 3 drops of shampoo in ½ cup of water)

 

FOR EYES

  • Artificial tears
  • Eye lubricant ointments
  • Warm compresses placed over closed eyes for 10 minutes
  • Wash eyes with warm water and baby shampoo, then gently pat dry
