Bipolar disorder

  • Mood disorder that affects a person’s emotions and behavior
  • Symptoms may include sudden change in behavior, inability to sleep, anxiety and
  • periods of depression alternating with periods of mania or high feeling
  • Cause unknown but may be hereditary
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in adolescence and early adulthood
  • May be mild to severe with treatment providing stabilization of mood swings
  • Disorder itself not life threatening but may be associated with increased risk for suicide

  • Avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs
  • Keep a list of what triggers and warning signs can often present before your episode
