Aortic coarctation

  • Narrowing or constriction of the major blood vessel of the body
  • Symptoms may include leg weakness and pain with activity, shortness of breath and high blood pressure
  • Cause unknown
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Commonly present at birth and occurs with other heart disorders
  • Increased risk of aneurysm or rupture of artery
  • May be mild without symptoms to severe with life threatening complications such as bleeding
  • Long-term outcome improves with early treatment
