Anemia, sickle cell

  • Inherited blood condition that may affect the entire body
  • Symptoms may include severe pain and swelling in the extremities in hands, back and abdominal pain with tiredness and possibly yellowing of skin and eyes
  • Caused by hereditary factors resulting in normally round red blood cells becoming sickle-shaped
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Present at birth
  • May be mild without symptoms to severe with organ damage
  • Can be life threatening if left untreated

  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Take a folic acid supplement
  • Increase your fluid intake (especially water)
  • Decrease your level of stress where possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
  • Avoid high-altitudes and temperature extremes
  • Regular moderate exercise

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
