Achilles tendinitis

  • Inflammation of the Achilles tendon at the back of the foot
  • Symptoms may include mild swelling and pain or tenderness at the back of the foot that increases with activity
  • Cause most often due to overuse and repetitive motion
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in older adults and athletes
  • May be mild but can become severe if left untreated

  • Avoid activities that increase pain
  • Elevate your foot on a pillow
  • Rest but avoid inactivity

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
